Bittersweet Ghost

A Spoken-Word Elegy

Written by George Michael Bennett

Foreword

This piece was written in silence.
Every line is a withheld scream.
Every raindrop, a memory I couldn’t hold.
Now it lives here, as a ghosted hymn.

Verse I: Twilight

Scene

The city fades. A shadow remains.

The daylight fades to twilight, the city starts to sleep,
But you’re the quiet shadow, the secret that I keep.
My personal spectre, you walk within the gloom,
A haunting presence, filling every empty room.
I bite my lip till it’s numb, so no one ever sees,
The sudden trembling rush that brings me to my knees.

Verse II: Rain

Refrain

Oh, the raindrops on the pavement, a silver, silent sheet,
They remind me of your kindness, bittersweet.
You were my one true love, the only heart I knew,
And every falling teardrop brings me back to you.

Verse III: Mask

Scene

The performance begins. The ache remains.

I plaster on a smile now, a performance for the day,
Pretend that I’m unbroken, wear the mask of “okay.”
Sometimes I turn the music up, a wild and lonely sound,
And dance within the darkness, where no one else is found.
I hide away inside the night, behind a bolted door,
Just me and your memory, always wanting more.

Verse IV: Rain Returns

Refrain

Oh, the raindrops on the pavement, a silver, silent sheet,
They remind me of your laughter, bittersweet.
You were my only light, the love I thought I knew,
And every falling teardrop pulls me back to you.

Verse V: Haunting

Scene

The ghost speaks. The silence breaks.

My heart, it weeps a river, beneath this brave facade,
A wound that time can’t heal, a love that leaves me scarred.
You’re the one who haunts me, echoing through my mind,
The only light I followed, now lost and left behind.
You’re the ghost that lingers, through my waking dreams,
The truth that breaks my silence, unraveling at the seams.

Verse VI: Final Refrain

Refrain

Oh, the raindrops on the pavement, a silver, silent sheet,
They remind me of your presence, bittersweet.
You were my only truth, the love forever true,
And every falling teardrop always brings me back to you.

Verse VII: Benediction

Scene

The rain remains. The longing endures.

And the rain keeps falling on this cold, grey street.
My ghost still lingers, oh, so bittersweet.
I hide my tears away, but my heart still longs for you,
Forever shadowed in this love, forever wanting true.
